The Team
Russell Moore
Owner
Hi, I’m Russell. Moore Than Fitness was built to offer a comfortable, inclusive, and safe space for people who feel out of place in a conventional gym. If you feel like you have no idea what to do, I want to teach you. People from all walks of life are welcome.
No matter your body type, you are welcome here. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t belong or didn’t feel confident in a gym, for whatever reason, I want to help you change that. Traditionally, gyms are intimidating, anxiety-provoking environments for those new to the fitness space. They are a place where men are supposed to act like men, and women unfortunately get leered at. I want to offer an alternative.
We’re all susceptible to body image issues and ideas of inadequacy. You know, those icky creeping thoughts that make you wonder why you don’t look like that Instagram model. Or that tells you that gyms are only for fit people.
At Moore Than Fitness, my goal as your trainer is to help nurture your fitness path and guide you towards your goals, while empowering you with the knowledge you need to know ‘how to fitness’ for the rest of your life . I will always be in your corner, no matter your starting place or any speed bumps you encounter along the way.
I believe that fitness needs to come not from a fear of failure, but rather a place of growth towards what is possible.

Kate Moore
Hey, I’m Kate!
I’m an 8 on the Enneagram, my sun sign is Sagittarius, and so is my rising sign so yeah, you got it: fire on fire on fire.
I love tools like the enneagram and astrology to accompany my Self Study practice, but something you should know about fire is that it can’t survive in a closed box. 🙂
For me, movement has always been a way that I’ve been able to express myself and access my personal freedom one box jump, pirouette, or sun salutation at a time. It’s like every time I feel my feet on the floor I remember who I am and every time I feel them leave the floor I remember what I’m capable of.
Since 2014, the gym has been a safe haven for me – a place to scream when I need to, collapse on the floor in cathartic exhaustion, lay down on the floor, and be with my friends.
But pre-2014, the gym was one of the least supportive places for me: it was a place that told me I wasn’t enough: in so many ways, in every way. Gym’s and the fitness industry as a whole created a lot of disordered relationships for me in my life: with my body, with other people (and their bodies), with food and alcohol. In my teenage years, I cycled through a lot of eating and exercise disorders trying to become the right size and a good person. But it never worked, and I continued to feel like I was failing.
So I started my own gym in Nashville, TN called getFIT615 in 2014 (you can still go there to this day!) because I wanted to create a gym where it wasn’t about what you looked like or what you could do, it was just about being supported and feeling good. There was no pressure to lose weight, or change the shape of your body, or even to get stronger – our tagline was “we’re glad you’re here no matter how you’re here.” And that was the period of my life where I learned what I always believed to be true but had never actually experienced for myself: gyms can be a wonderful place.
What I learned though, is that it takes intentionality on behalf of everyone involved to do it differently.
I’m so excited to be continuing my work as a Personal Trainer, a Group Fitness hype girlie, and a Self Study Coach here at More Than Fitness.
I know you don’t believe it but, no, Russell and I, though both gingers with the last name Moore, are not related. It’s wild to me too. But I am so excited to be part of his gym fam. When I moved back to my hometown of RVA, I was in search of another gym that felt like home. When I walked into Russell’s chicken themed, orange on the inside and with hand-painted rainbow-colored dumbbells-by-Russell Gym, I immediately felt at home.
I want to be somebody in the world of fitness who can show you that you belong here too.
I specialize in offering guidance for anyone who wants to feel good in their body. Together, we’ll co-create what fitness means to you. We’ll build workouts around movements and gear that you feel excited about. You’ll feel empowered instead of defeated when you leave our session. You’ll feel more connected to yourSELF. You’ll feel stronger too. I promise that you don’t have to be in a good mood every time we have a session – I’m glad you’re here no matter how you’re here.
I’m white, I’m cis, I’m bi, and I love an afternoon margarita. I will also likely use bad words during our sessions.
When I’m not with clients at Moore Than Fitness, I’m with Self Study Coaching clients via the Duality Project, I’m doing projects at my childhood home in Goochland, I’m editing the Self Study Podcast, I’m getting immense joy from seeing my dog so happy, or I’m having a marg and brisket taco over at the Smoky Mug.

August Vuono
Hi, my name is August!
My goal as your coach is to help you find the joy in movement. When I
first started my own fitness journey, I certainly didn’t think I
belonged at the gym. There were so many negative feelings I had around
working out, and it would always circle back to not feeling good about
myself. Having the right coach changed my outlook on this completely,
and I started showing up differently to my workout sessions. I was
given the opportunity to prove myself wrong when it came to the
self-limiting beliefs and prescriptions I had of myself. I learned
that I actually DID belong in the gym, and not just to work out- I
wanted to take the joy that training had given me and share it with
others!
I understand how overwhelming or scary it can feel to step into a gym
for the first time. I understand how life can be crazy and make
reaching your fitness goals feel really hard. I also understand the
importance of having a great coach by your side to support you
throughout your journey, and I want to be that for you! I promise you
that you can do hard things, and you’ll be so amazed by what you can
do.
I love working with everybody, but I especially love working with
folks who feel brand new to the gym and want to feel a little more at
home in the space. My approach to fitness centers around YOU, so we
will always work together to move you towards your goals.
Arryn Grogan
Hey there! I’m Arryn, and I use he/him pronouns.
A few of my favorite things are dunking chocolate chip cookies in milk (and eating them too!), training in some sort of martial art, cooking with music blasting, using my handyperson skills, and drinking fancy coffee with my pinky out whilst reading a book. Oh yeah, I also love to nerd out on strength training stuff!
I grew up a scrawny, video-gaming boy in Central Florida. I wasn’t athletic and only played sports my parents forced me to. In 2011, in my early 20s, I started training in martial arts (Jeet Kune Do & Filipino Martial Arts), and it was through that that I developed a strength training practice a year later. I started lifting weights in my garage with just a 16-kilo kettlebell and an instructional book. In 2015, after taking a kettlebell instructor certification, I began to coach others, working at a gym with folks in a 1:1 and (large) group-class setting.
These days, my life and business partner, Holly, and I continue to grow our coaching and entrepreneurial skills through our online coaching business that we started in 2018. When we started, we primarily coached other coaches who were working towards the same certifications/achievements we had. Though we still work with many coaches today, we have expanded our training style to include everyday fitness enthusiasts who use strength training to complement their sport and everyday life. In September 2023, we took our online business on the road (in the air and across the water too!), becoming digital nomads as we circumnavigated the globe, staying in nine countries along the way.
Despite having an online training biz, I still really enjoy working with people in person. In my years as a trainer, I’ve worked with newbies, seniors, athletes (mostly BJJ), queer folx, along with experienced strength athletes and other coaches. I coach folks who are serious about exercising but don’t take themselves too seriously. My goal is to help you do it in a playful, balanced way that honors your humanity, first and foremost.
